Two-days International Conference on ‘Business Ethics and Corporate Governance’ Concludes at GNA University
GNA University in collaboration with Punjab Commerce Management
Association (PCMA) organized a two-day 14th International conference on
‘Business Ethics and Corporate Governance’ at its campus from 22-23
September 2017. The conference received an overwhelming response from
academicians, industrialists and research scholars from reputed
institutions of the country. The first day of the conference started
with seeking blessings of the God by lightning the lamp by distinguished
dignitaries. On this occasion, S. Gursaran Singh Seehra, Chancellor,
GNA University released the ‘PCMA Journal of Business’ and congratulated
university officials for their tireless efforts in organizing such
prestigious events that can bridge the gap between industry and
academia. Dr. Prem Kumar, Vice Chancellor, GNA University welcomed all
the guests, PCMA officials, participants, faculty members and students.
Dr. Ashwani Bhalla, Executive Vice-President, PCMA threw light on
journey of PCMA that started in 2005 and also highlighted the
achievements and academic activities undertaken by PCMA. Mr. Rajan Dhir,
Head, Faculty of Business Studies, GNA University presented his views
on the conference theme. He touched upon several important issues like
mandatory and non-mandatory disclosures practices undertaken by
companies in India. The adverse effects of non-compliance of disclosures
were also discussed.
Dr. Geeta. M, IIM Amritsar was key note speaker at the conference. During her talk, she highlighted how the businesses across the world need to adopt ethical practices for their growth and welfare of the society as a whole. It was followed by a panel discussion that was chaired by Dr. S.K. Singla, Ex-Director, GNA-IMT. other eminent panelists were Dr. H.S. Bhalla, Government College, Ajnala; Dr. Ashwani Bhalla, Professor, S.C.D. Government College, Ludhiana and Dr. Bahram Ramesh from Afghanistan. Dr. S.K Singla raised several issues in Indian businesses like charging higher prices than MRP, discount related issues and underestimated role of independent director in making company’s decisions. Dr. H.S. Bhalla threw light on malpractices being followed in companies and stressed on bringing the transparency to the Indian accounting standards at par with International Financial Reporting Standards. Dr. Ashwani Bhalla stressed upon the constructive role of a common man in promoting ethical practices in the country. He gave several practical examples where companies have started CSR activities but failed to continue with such activities for a longer time period. Dr. Bahram Ramesh discussed about profit maximization approach of companies that deprives us of our rights as consumers. During post-lunch panel discussion, the house again witnessed a healthy discussion on the conference theme.
In evening, PCMA annual award ceremony was also hosted in which contributions of eminent personalities in the field of education, administration and social works were acknowledged. First, PCMA Life-time achievement award 2017 was presented to Dr. B. K. Punia, Worthy Vice-chancellor, MDU, Rohtak for his valuable achievements in higher education. Second, Dr. Sandeep Kapur, School of Business Studies, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana received PCMA Management Excellence Award 2017 for bringing continuous advancements in management field. Third, PCMA Educational Administrator Award 2017 was conferred to Dr. Dharam Singh Sandhu, Principal, S.C.D. Government College, Ludhiana for his dynamic and charismatic leadership in an educational institution. Fourth, PCMA Award for Social Service 2017 and PCMA Award for Best CSR Practices 2017 were presented to Mr. Kuldeep Singh Butter and DG Stones Limited respectively. S. Gurdeep Singh Seehra, Pro-chancellor, GNA University congratulated awardees for their unique achievements in different fields.
On the second day of the conference, Dr. Jasveen Kaur, Head, University Business School, GNDU, Amritsar and Dr. J. K. Gulati, GNDU College, Jalandhar chaired the technical sessions where more than 100 participants presented their research work that lead to useful discussions among the audience. The participants gained new knowledge and acquired insights into the industry practices being followed across different sectors like pharmaceutical, telecom, manufacturing, FMCG and hospitality. Dr. G. S. Bhalla, GNDU, Amritsar delivered valedictory addresses of the conference and appreciated the efforts of GNA University and PCMA in organizing such useful events.
